In the second half of the 1800s in Elxleben, Prussia, soon to become Germany, a young couple left Europe, their friends, and their families to start a new life in a new country. They traveled over 3700 miles from Germany, across the Atlantic Ocean, landing first in New York City. They continued their trek to a small growing community in Northwestern Illinois. Why? They chose to live in a new country still healing from the strife of a tragic Civil War. They also chose an area in Northwestern Illinois where the town still had memories of recent Indian Wars. It remembered a tall young man who rode to Dixon, Illinois as a Captain to assist in the war against Chief Blackhawk. This young man, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States. This same city, Dixon, Illinois raised another young man who became the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan. This book attempts to detail written and verbal accounts of how the couple settled in Dixon, Illinois, built a small kiln and in 1869 started a bakery business while raising a large family. That business lasted through three generations...or 93 years. This is a historical tribute to one man's dream, his family's hard work and foresight and the dedicated work of many employees. Three generations of Beiers managed the continuing growth of the company with its multiple facilities in different cities in Northern Illinois and Eastern Iowa. The book captures good stories, sad and humorous events, its history, and struggles but interesting and joyous events with an unfortunate conclusion. The book is written by a great-great grandson of the founder, and whose godparents were the third and last generation of the Beier family to manage the business.
